Group Monitoring Gulf Coast Developments
The Group is monitoring developments and issues concerning natural resource damage assessment and restoration (NRDAR) relative to the Gulf Coast Spill. Relevant issues and documents, especially those with national policy and practice implications, will be posted to the Group's NRDAR Practice Exchange Website. (This website was set up in 2005 by the Group in cooperation with the US Department of the Interior, NOAA, and State natural resource trustee representatives to facilitate communication and practice exchange among diverse practitioners in both public and private sectors who are engaged in NRDAR and related matters).
Working with Federal and State Trustees to Facilitate Industry Participation in a Variety of Forums
The Group continues to faciliate industry participation in numerous industry/trustee meetings. Three recent meetings provided an opportunity for industrial company representatives to meet with NRD trustees (for natural resources) and discuss non-site-specific assessment and restoration issues of mutual interest, including the following: (1) April 7, 2010 – initial meeting by conference phone of the “Northeast Joint Assessment Team”; (2) April 7, 2010 – webinar convened by the Great Lakes Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Roundtable; and (3) April 21, 2010 – “Open Day” of annual US DOI meeting involving national NRDAR personnel and other stakeholders in Phoenix, AZ. Great Lakes NRDA Roundtable Brings Together Trustees, Industry and Practitioners
The second Great Lakes Natural Resource Damage Assessment (“NRDA”) Roundtable convened in April 2009 in Lansing, MI, involving participation by over 50 representatives from federal trustee agencies, state trustee agencies, and the industrial and practitioner communities to discuss NRDAR practice issues of concern to the Great Lakes region. The Great Lakes NRDA Roundtable is one of four regional multi-stakeholder NRDAR forums in the US at present Member Companies may access the Members-US website for additional information and meeting materials.
US Department of the Interior Publishes Final Rule on Natural Resource Damages for Hazardous Substances
The US Department of the Interior published, in the Federal Register, the "Natural Resource Damages for Hazardous Substances" Final Rule (73 Fed. Reg. 57259). The Group will be convening conference calls and meetings of its Industrial Company and Affiliate members to examine the practical effects of the rule changes.
