ENDS Europe Features Group Survey of Industrial Companies…


The ENDS Europe Article, “Firms Getting Prepared for Environmental Liability”, published on 19 February 2010 described the Group’s report summarizing two surveys of industrial companies across Europe undertaken earlier this year. The article highlighted that “Companies in the industrial sector are getting prepared for potential liabilities in the event of major environment damage caused by their activities…”. The report – “Survey of Industrial Companies: Insurance and Other Financial Security Instruments and Remediation of Environmental Damages under the EU Environmental Liability Directive” – was provided to the European Commission as potentially useful input to the Commission’s required report to Parliament on the effectiveness of the ELD and related financial security instruments. Group Submits Comments on UNEP Environmental Liability Draft Guidelines


On 30 June 2009, the Group submitted comments in response to the United Nations Environmental Programme "Draft Guidelines for the development of national legislation on liability, response action and compensation for damage caused by activities dangerous to the environment". Group's Director and Member Companies Attend European Commission ELD Workshop


The Group's Director, Barbara Goldsmith, and some Group Industrial Company Members participated in a European Commission-sponsored Workshop concerning the Environmental Liability Directive, “Implementation Efficiency of ELD”, held on Friday, 10 July 2009 in Brussels.

CEA Releases Guide on the Environmental Liability Directive


At its third Environmental Liability Workshop held on 23 April 2009, CEA released the document, “Navigating the Environmental Liability Directive: A practical guide for insurance underwriters and claim handlers”, which provides analysis related to “areas that insurers may wish to consider when providing risk transfer solutions for the resulting liabilities”. “Toolkit” Detailing Scaling Methods for Environmental Damage Assessment Released in the EU


The Final Toolkit of recommended methods and related Case Studies of the REMEDE (Resource Equivalency Methods for Assessing Environmental Damage in the EU) Project were publicly released, but will remain in draft form until formally approved by the European Commission. The Commission-sponsored REMEDE Project was launched in 2006 to support Annex II (common framework for environmental damages) of the Environmental Liability Directive by recommending methodologies and approaches related to resource equivalency determinations.
